Easy to use technology transforms survival rates of colleagues who suffer cardiac arrest at work

Around the world, victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) have their chances of survival greatly inhibited, even when Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are readily available, because bystanders feel unable, and therefore are unwilling, to use them. However, improved technology is paving the path to more people getting the treatment they need faster due to the development of defibrillators that are easier to use than ever before. 

One of the leading causes of death and disability globally
In the UK, there are over 30,000 cardiac arrests a year outside hospitals; it is estimated that Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) is one of the leading causes of death and disability globally. This year, the London Ambulance Service released statistics that showed that the proportion of people surviving a cardiac arrest in the UK is increasing thanks to the presence of AEDs. However, that rate is still just 10.8% lagging behind other developed countries, such as Norway (25%) and North Holland (21%).

In context, the chances of surviving a cardiac arrest drop 10% a minute if CPR is not started. Meanwhile, recent research has shown that when a defibrillator is used by a bystander and at least one shock is delivered to patients, the survival rate is more than five times higher (57.1%).

We can do better as a community
In order to improve survival rates, we can do several things: 

  • We can provide first aid training so individuals can identify when someone has gone into Cardiac Arrest

  • We can demonstrate how to use AEDs to give bystanders the confidence to use them.

  • We can make sure AEDs are readily available in places of work and public spaces

  • We can make technology that’s easy for a lay bystander to use in high-pressure situations available with simple instructions.


Workplaces have a powerful role to play
Most of the world’s population (58%) spend one-third of their adult life at work according to the World Health Organisation. That percentage of time makes workplaces well placed to play a key role in improving survival rates from cardiac arrest by making sure that people have the right equipment, and knowledge of how to use it, available in order to allow them to act fast.
